While deciding on the finishing touches for your kitchen remodel is one of the most important aspects, it’s also often the most challenging.

There’s a seemingly endless combination of materials, combinations, and price points to choose from, which can make selecting your final picks especially difficult. But, the good news is, it’s really a matter of design preference—and the following guidelines can help you make the best choices.

1 – Start with the countertops.

Since countertops are one of the largest surface areas in your kitchen other than the cabinets, this is is the perfect place to begin. The countertops will be a focal point in the room, so it can be easier to build your other choices off of this one.

Pay special attention to the texture and color of your kitchen island and countertops. Look for smooth, light materials that are highly durable. Granite or composite materials are popular choices, as are stainless steel, tile, stone, and butcher’s block wood if you want a more unique look.

Try to keep it clean and simple by choosing one material for all of your countertops. If you do want some variation, try a different material on your kitchen island only.

2 – Give special attention to your kitchen cabinets.

Cabinets will be the first thing you and your guests notice in the room, and will make up the heart of your kitchen. Because cabinets make such a significant impact, it’s important to make the right choice.

Stick with selections that are clean and natural. Choose one color for all of your cabinets. If you do want some unique variation, try selecting one color for your upper cabinets and another for your lowers. You can also choose one color for all of your cabinets then a different custom color for your kitchen island.

Consider the square footage of your space when making selections. A light cabinet color can open and brighten up small spaces. Dark cabinet colors can add richness to larger kitchens.

3 – Tie it all together with additional finishes.

Once your countertop and cabinet selections have been made, you’re reading to choose your final finishes. Consider adding some contrast in ways like pairing light backsplashes with dark cabinets. Also pay special attention to lighting, fixtures, appliances, and hardware.

The purpose of these smaller finishes should be to enhance your cabinet and countertop selections and to add contrast without being distracting.
