Refinishing cabinets is a tough, time-consuming job. A big reason for this is the amount of prep work that goes into cabinet refinishing. Between disassembling your cabinets, cleaning the dirt and grime off of them, letting them dry, and then finally refinishing them, the majority of work happens before you actually apply the new layer of finish.

That’s why so many of our customers here in North Salt Lake, Layton, Ogden, and the Northern Utah area prefer professional cabinet refinishing from N-Hance®!

There’s a lot that DIYers need to do before refinishing cabinets. But with a professional refinisher or professional cabinet painter, the workload shrinks substantially.

Steps to Take Before Refinishing Cabinets Yourself:

Steps you will need to take to ensure a professional job if you DIY:

  1. Plan Your Refinishing Project. Before refinishing kitchen cabinets, it’s important that you plan your project. That means learning about the refinishing process, choosing your hardwood finish, purchase the necessary materials at the stores here in North Salt Lake, Layton, Ogden, and the Northern Utah area, and develop a realistic timeline for the project. It is going to take you a LONG TIME if you do it yourself.
  2. Remove All Of Your Cabinet Doors And All Of Your HardWare. Cabinet refinishing requires access to cabinet surfaces. You will need to remove cabinet doors, drawer fronts, handles, knobs, and hinges. You will need to keep these labeled and sorted so you can put them all back together at the end too!
  3. Clean Your Kitchen Cabinet Surfaces. Cabinets acquire a layer of grime over time. This grime can cause serious issues of adhesion during refinishing. Cabinets need to be thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, dirt, grease, and oils.
  4. Protect The Rest Of The Kitchen. Refinishing kitchen cabinets can be messy. Some of the products used in the cabinet refinishing process can permanently stain or damage surfaces. Before you start your refinishing project, make sure you protect countertops, appliances, walls, floors, ceilings, and anything else in the surrounding areas.
  5. Remove The Old Finish. Before you can apply the new finish, you’ll need the old one removed. If you use a sandless removal technique like a liquid abrasion treatment you can scuff the cabinets. Otherwise you will have to sand the cabinets down to the raw wood.
  6. Prepare For Sealer By Cleaning Again. If you sand your cabinets, this will leave a bunch of wood dust behind. And if you use a liquid abrasion, you’ll have a mess too. You will need to thoroughly clean your cabinets to remove all of this.
  7. Prepare The Cabinet For Finish. When you apply finish to wood, the finish needs something to bond with. This is accomplished by roughening the wood — either via sanding or liquid abrasion — which gives the finish a surface with more grip. Then by using a sealer coat.
