Hardware Is Important In Cabinet Design

If you’re in the process of remodeling your kitchen, or planning to remodel that space you may have asked yourself if the “no hardware” trend is a design element that will work for you…or do you replace your cabinet’s hardware instead? As the Treasure Valley’s top cabinet refinisher we have installed a lot of new hardware where there wasn’t any before, so we may be a bit biased, but we are also lovers of great design and see both options create some truly amazing looks. That said, let us share with you some pro’s and con’s of both looks.

Cabinet Hardware

Some designers view cabinet hardware as the jewelry of the room…tiny details that have a significant visual impact enhancing the look of your kitchen or bathroom. Cabinet hardware is available in an endless variety of styles, shapes and finishes, allowing you to pick the perfect look and function to match your style. So, what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of going for cabinet hardware?

Pros:

  • Show off your style and personality
  • Protect cabinets from dirty hands
  • Pull handles are easy to use for all ages
  • Can be easily replaced for a quick uplift
  • Polished brass hardware is sealed with lacquer and wont age or discolor
  • Some options are corrosion resistant, like stainless steel

Cons:

  • Doorknobs might be more difficult to operate for children and elderly people
  • Some polished hardware, like brass, has a shiny finish that will show fingerprints
  • Bronze hardware is more porous than other metals and can pit over time

No Hardware

Cabinets with no hardware definitely have a more sleek and minimalist look that seems to focus on simplicity and strong lines. The trend of clean interiors with no visual breakup is certainly on the rise and we absolutely embrace that look in the right space, but are cabinets with no hardware better than cabinets with hardware?

Pros:

  • Clean and minimal design
  • Clothing does not get stuck
  • No polishing or patina maintenance
  • Can compliment a more modern design

Cons:

  • With more handling on the surfaces, they can become dirty faster
  • Cutout handles can easily trap grime, moisture and food
  • Handless touch latches can accidentally open
  • Increase cost in hidden opening mechanisms
