We have several guests Home Shows inquire about two subjects: thermofoil cabinets and refacing.
Rigid Thermofoil (RTF) cabinets have a become a popular option when purchasing new cabinets because of the attractive price point. However, in our line of work we see, first-hand, the many drawbacks to thermofoil. Time, heat, and humidity are all key factors in the rapid deterioration of these types of cabinets. Thermofoil cabinets are made by heat-shrinking a vinyl coating onto the surface of compressed, medium-density fiberboard. Because the manufacturers are not footing the bill to mill real, solid wood, they can offer customers an inexpensive option for new or replacement cabinetry.
Sadly, the money ‘saved’ on initial purchase is then spent to reface various elements of the cabinets just 1-2 years later. This is where the second topic comes into play.
Cabinet refacing involves the replacement of several elements of the kitchen cabinetry. Most of our customers are satisfied with the layout of their kitchen and simply desire a new, repaired look. Our refacing process begins with door style and wood species selection and ends with the installation of new, custom-made, real wood cabinet doors, drawers, hinges, and hardware. Sometimes, we are asked to replace drawer boxes too!** Many of the thermofoil kitchens that we service have taken note of the drawbacks to a fiberboard/engineered cabinet and opt for the refacing option. This level of service gives them brand-new, custom styled, colored, and finished doors with durable and craftsmanship that LAST.
